Abstract: Eucalyptus planted forests contribute to maximizing lumber production but problems such as longitudinal growth strain can negatively influence the quality of the products. Knowing dendrometric variables and wood properties can help in the prediction of longitudinal growth strain, mainly with the help of artificial intelligence. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the use of artificial neural networks to predict longitudinal growth strain in Eucalyptus trees based on dendrometric variables, spacing between trees and wood density. The longitudinal growth strain was measured in trees of four Eucalyptus clones planted in three spacings. The diameter and height of each tree were measured. The basic wood density was determined. Artificial neural networks were used to estimate longitudinal growth strain as a function of dendrometric variables, tree spacing and wood density. The results showed that the artificial neural networks presented good results for training and validation, with most of them resulting in high correlation coefficient values. The trained artificial neural networks showed a correlation coefficient above 0,56. Artificial neural networks showed that the variables clone and basic wood density were the ones that most contributed to the prediction of longitudinal growth strain. On the other hand, the spacing between trees, the height of the tree and the diameter at breast height were not relevant to predict growth stresses.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o uso do modelo de rede neural convolucional You Only Look Once (YOLO) para detecção e contagem eficiente de brotos de Eucalyptus sp. em plantações, por meio de fotografias aéreas capturadas por veículos aéreos não tripulados. Para isso, avaliou-se a importância da organização dos dados durante o processo de treinamento do sistema. Foram utilizados dois conjunto de dados para treinar a rede neural convolucional: um consistindo em imagens com um único broto e o outro com pelo menos dez brotos por imagem. Os resultados mostraram altas taxas de precisão e recall para ambos os conjuntos de dados. A rede neural convolucional treinada com imagens contendo dez brotos por imagem apresentou desempenho superior quando aplicada a dados não utilizados durante o treinamento. Portanto, a rede neural convolucional YOLO pode ser usada para detecção e contagem de brotos de clones de Eucalyptus sp. a partir de imagens aéreas capturadas por veículos aéreos não tripulados em áreas florestais. Abstract The objective of this work was to investigate the use of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) convolutional neural network model for the detection and efficient counting of Eucalyptus sp. shoots in stands through aerial photographs captured by unmanned aerial vehicles. For this, the significance of data organization was evaluated during the system-training process. Two datasets were used to train the convolutional neural network: one consisting of images with a single shoot and another with at least ten shoots per image. The results showed high precision and recall rates for both datasets. The convolutional neural network trained with images containing ten shoots per image showed a superior performance when applied to data not used during training. Therefore, the YOLO convolutional neural network can be used for the detection and counting of shoots of Eucalyptus sp. clones from aerial images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles in forest stands. Resumo O uso dos métodos de otimização como ferramenta de auxílio ao manejo florestal cresceu nas últimas décadas. No entanto, há a necessidade de entender como essas técnicas foram aplicadas ao manejo florestal no Brasil. Assim, este trabalho apresenta uma visão geral sobre o comportamento da ciência florestal brasileira nesse aspecto, indicando tendências e lacunas que podem servir de base para futuros estudos. Foram selecionados os periódicos de maior relevância acadêmica na categoria florestal a partir da base de dados Journal Citation Reports. Os artigos foram analisados em termos do banco de dados utilizado (se real ou teórico), gênero das espécies cultivadas, nível de planejamento (estratégico, tático ou operacional), modelo de planejamento, método utilizado para resolver o problema proposto (programação matemática clássica ou meta-heurísticas), tipo de função-objetivo e categoria de restrições. Como resultado, foram encontrados 44 artigos publicados no período de 1976 a 2019. Os tipos de dados que predominaram foram os reais nos últimos anos, o que indica uma aproximação da academia no âmbito empresarial. A espécies exóticas tiveram maior participação nos estudos que as nativas. O planejamento estratégico é mais abordado, seguido do tático e por último o operacional. Quanto aos métodos, observou-se uma tendência em se utilizar combinações entre métodos clássicos e heurísticas. A função-objetivo predominante foi a de maximizar a receita e a restrição envolvendo produção volumétrica. Portanto, foi possível identificar tendências e lacunas e analisar os resultados em uma visão crítica.

Abstract The use of optimization methods as tools to aid the forest management has grown in the recent decades. However, there is a need to understand how these techniques were applied to forest management in Brazil. Thus, this work presents an overview of the behavior of Brazilian forestry science in this aspect, indicating trends and gaps that can serve as bases for future studies. The most relevant academic journals were selected from the Journal Citation Reports database and the articles were analyzed in terms of the database used (whether real or theoretical), genus of species grown, level of planning (strategic, tactical or operational), planning model, method used to solve the proposed problem (classical mathematical programming or metaheuristics), type of objective function and category of restrictions. As a result, 44 articles published in the period from 1976 to 2019 were found. The types of data that predominated were the real ones in the recent years, which indicates an approximation of the academia in the business sphere. The exotic species had a greater participation in the studies than the native ones. Strategic planning is more approached, followed by tactical and finally operational. As for the methods, there was a tendency to use combinations between classic and heuristic methods. The objective function that was most applied was to maximize revenue and the restriction involving the volumetric production. Therefore, it was possible to identify trends and gaps and analyze the results in a critical view.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar métodos para obtenção do índice de sítio para povoamentos de eucalipto (Eucalyptus spp.), bem como avaliar seus impactos na estabilidade desse índice em bases de dados com e sem a presença de “outliers”. Foram testados três métodos, com uso de regressão linear, regressão quantílica e rede neural artificial. Foram utilizadas 22 parcelas permanentes de inventário florestal contínuo, medidas em árvores com idade de 23 a 83 meses. Os outliers foram identificados com uso de gráfico de boxplot. A rede neural artificial proporcionou melhores resultados que as regressões linear e quantílica, tanto para as estimativas de altura dominante quanto do índice de sítio. A estabilidade da classificação do índice de sítio obtida pela rede neural artificial também foi melhor que a obtida com os outros métodos, independentemente da presença ou da ausência de outliers na base de dados. Isso indica que a rede neural artificial é uma técnica sólida de modelagem na presença de outliers. Quando a causa da presença de outliers na base de dados não é conhecida, eles podem ser mantidos nela se técnicas como as de redes neurais artificiais ou de regressão quantílica forem utilizadas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare methods of obtaining the site index for eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) stands, as well as to evaluate their impact on the stability of this index in databases with and without outliers. Three methods were tested, using linear regression, quantile regression, and artificial neural network. Twenty-two permanent plots from a continuous forest inventory were used, measured in trees with ages from 23 to 83 months. The outliers were identified using a boxplot graphic. The artificial neural network showed better results than the linear and quantile regressions, both for dominant height and site index estimates. The stability obtained for the site index classification by the artificial neural network was also better than the one obtained by the other methods, regardless of the presence or the absence of outliers in the database. This shows that the artificial neural network is a solid modelling technique in the presence of outliers. When the cause of the presence of outliers in the database is not known, they can be kept in it if techniques as artificial neural networks or quantile regression are used.

ABSTRACT The heterogeneous behavior of wood during drying is a process difficult to control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the neuro-fuzzy hybrid system for monitoring wood moisture during drying. Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis samples (2 x 2 x 4 cm) were saturated and dried in climatic chamber for 15 days. Basic density was determined by the dry mass/saturated volume ratio. Two neuro-fuzzy systems were developed to monitor wood moisture, the first based on the genetic material and drying period and the second based on basic density and drying period. The drying rate of wood samples was higher at the initial period and all reached equilibrium moisture content after 15 days. Density showed relationship with wood moisture during the study period. Both systems have the potential to monitor moisture, however, neuro-fuzzy system based on basic density and drying period showed better results and is therefore more suitable.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da rotação florestal sobre a viabilidade técnica e econômica da produção de madeira de eucalipto para carvão, em diferentes classes de produtividade. Utilizaram-se dados de povoamentos de Eucalyptus cuja área foi estratificada em três classes de produtividade: alta, média e baixa. A cada classe, aplicaram-se diferentes critérios de rotação florestal, conforme: idade de máxima produtividade, idade econômica de corte, única idade de corte e rotação sem parâmetro técnico. Realizaram-se análises de viabilidade econômica e de produção para o horizonte de planejamento de 21 anos. Para a rotação sem parâmetro técnico, realizou-se uma simulação pelo método de Monte Carlo. Para todos os critérios de rotação, observou-se viabilidade para as classes de alta e média produtividade, e inviabilidade para a classe de baixa produtividade. Para a rotação sem parâmetro técnico, não há chance de o projeto ser inviável. A viabilidade da produção de madeira para carvão nas condições estudadas depende da capacidade produtiva do local, para qualquer critério de rotação adotado. O critério de rotação influencia a rentabilidade, cuja definição, em razão da capacidade produtiva do local, contribui para a maximização da produção e para o retorno econômico do projeto florestal nas condições estudadas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of forest rotation on the technical and economic feasibility of eucalyptus wood production for charcoal, in different productivity classes. Data came from Eucalyptus stands whose area was stratified into three classes of productivity: high, medium, and low. To each class, a different criterion of forest rotation was applied, as follows: age of maximum productivity, economic rotation age, single harvest age, and no technical parameter. Analyses of economic feasibility and production were performed for a 21-year planning horizon. For rotation without a technical parameter, a simulation by the Monte Carlo method was performed. For all rotation criteria, feasibility was observed for high- and medium-productivity classes, and unfeasibility for the low-productivity class. For rotation without a technical parameter, there is no chance for the project to be unfeasible. Wood production viability for charcoal under the studied conditions depends on the productivity class, for any rotation criterion adopted. Rotation criterion influences profitability, whose definition, according to productivity class, contributes to forest production maximization and to the economic return of the project, under the studied conditions.

ABSTRACT In forest science it is important evaluate new technologies from computational science. This work aimed to test a different kind of metaheuristic called Variable Neighborhood Search in a forest planning problem. The management total area has 4.210 ha distributed in 120 stands in ages between 1 and 6 years old and site index since 22 m to 31 m. The problem was modelled considering the maximization of the net present value subject to the restrictions: annual cut volume between 140.000 m³ and 160.000 m³, harvester ages equal to 5, 6 or 7 years, and the impossibility of division of the management unity at harvester time. It was evaluated different settings for the Variable Neighborhood Search, varying the quantity of neighbours, the neighbourhood structure and number or generations. 30 repetitions were performed for each setting. The results were compared to the one obtained from integer linear programming and linear programming. The integer linear programming considered the best solution obtained after 1 hour of processing. The best setting to the Variable Neighborhood Search was 100 neighbours, a neighbourhood structure with changes in 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% of prescriptions and 500 iterations. The results shown by the Variable Neighborhood Search was 2,77% worse than one obtained by the integer linear programming with 1 hours of processing, and 2,84% worse than the linear programming. It is possible to conclude that the presented metaheuristic can be used satisfactorily in a resolution of forest scheduling problem when the best parameters are chosen.

RESUMO Neste artigo buscou-se estimar os volumes de árvores de diferentes espécies do Cerrado usando redes neurais artificiais e fazer comparações dos resultados com estimativas obtidas a partir de equações volumétricas tradicionais. Os dados foram coletados em 15 parcelas de 400 m² em uma área de 29,6 ha. Em cada parcela, o diâmetro da altura do peito (D) (diâmetro a 1,30 m do solo), a altura total (Ht) e a altura comercial (Hc) de todos os indivíduos com D igual ou superior a 3,0 cm foram medidos. Depois, cada árvore foi derrubada para obtenção do volume. O método de Huber foi usado considerando a medida dos diâmetros do fuste até 3,0 cm. Os dados obtidos foram utilizados para treinar redes neurais artificiais (RNA) e ajustar equações volumétricas para estimar o volume total e comercial das árvores. Este estudo mostrou que as RNA e as equações volumétricas são eficientes para a obtenção de volumes estimados de árvores no Cerrado. As redes neurais artificiais, que consideram a espécie como uma variável categórica de entrada, apresentaram melhores resultados do que aquelas que são treinadas sem essa variável.

ABSTRACT This paper seeks to estimate tree volumes of different species from the Brazilian savanna by using artificial neural networks and by making comparisons of results with estimates obtained from traditional volumetric equations. Data was obtained from 15 squared samples of 400 m² in an area of 29.6 ha. In each plot, breast height diameter (D) (diameter at 1.30 m from soil), total height (Ht) and commercial height (Hc) of all individuals with D equals or higher than 3.0 cm were measured. Afterwards, each tree was felled for volume measurement. Huber method was used considering measurement of stem diameters with more than 3.0 cm. Obtained data was used to train artificial neural networks (ANN) and to adjust volumetric equations to estimate total and commercial volume of trees. This study has shown that ANN and regression models are efficient for obtaining estimated volumes of trees in the Brazilian savanna. This suggests that artificial neural networks, that take into consideration species as a categorical input variable and were data trained, presented better results than those that are trained without categorical input.

RESUMO O presente estudo objetivou propor e implementar um modelo conceitual de sistema inteligente em um ambiente georreferenciado para dimensionar a frota de transporte de madeira. Para isso, foi utilizada a teoria dos sistemas multiagentes, a qual é uma sub-área da Inteligência Artificial Distribuída. O modelo proposto considera a utilização do mapeamento de talhões e estradas florestais, bem como de informações sobre as capacidades de carga de diferentes tipos de caminhões. O sistema foi idealizado para se adaptar às mudanças que ocorrem durante a operação de transporte florestal, tal como modificações no volume de madeira demandado ou inclusão de restrições das rotas utilizadas pelos veículos. Para seu desenvolvimento, foi utilizada a linguagem de programação Java considerando-se a biblioteca LPSolve para os cálculos de otimização do sistema, a plataforma JADE para desenvolvimento dos agentes e a ArcGIS Runtime para determiner as rotas ótimas de transporte. Cinco agentes foram modelados: transportador, controlador, roteador, carregador e descarregador. O modelo foi capaz de determiner a quantidade ótima de caminhões dentre os diferentes tipos disponíveis de forma a attender a demanda de madeira e considerando a disponibilidade de rotas, com foco na minimização dos custos totais do transporte da madeira. O sistema também foi capaz de se rearranjar após alterações nas rotas de transporte.

ABSTRACT This study aims to propose and implement a conceptual model of an intelligent system in a georeferenced environment to determine the design of forest transport fleets. For this, we used a multi-agent systems based tool, which is the subject of studies of distributed artificial intelligence. The proposed model considers the use of plantation mapping (stands) and forest roads, as well as information about the different vehicle transport capacities. The system was designed to adapt itself to changes that occur during the forest transport operation process, such as the modification of demanded volume or the inclusion of route restrictions used by the vehicles. For its development, we used the Java programming language associated with the LPSolve library for the optimization calculation, the JADE platform to develop agents, and the ArcGis Runtime to determine the optimal transport routes. Five agents were modelled: the transporter, controller, router, loader and unloader agents. The model is able to determine the amount of trucks among the different vehicles available that meet the demand and availability of routes, with a focus on minimizing the total costs of timber transport. The system can also rearrange itself after the transportation routes change during the process.

RESUMO Dada a importância de se avaliar novas tecnologias para otimização do planejamento florestal, este trabalho objetivou introduzir a metaheurística Clonal Selection Algorithm na resolução de um problema de ordenamento da produção florestal. Considerou-se uma área manejada de tamanho igual a 4.210 ha, contendo 120 talhões com idades entre 1 e 6 anos e índice de sítio variando entre 22 m e 31 m. O problema foi modelado com o objetivo de se maximizar o valor presente líquido global do empreendimento e considerou como restrições uma demanda anual entre 140.000m3 e 160.000 m3, colheita apenas nas idades de 5, 6 e 7 anos e a imposição de não fracionamento dos talhões no momento do corte. Foram avaliados diferentes configurações da metaheurística Clonal Selection Algorithm, variando-se as taxas de seleção, clonagem, hipermutação e substituição, além do tamanho da população inicial. Considerou-se como critério de parada uma quantidade de gerações igual a 100 e para cada parametrização avaliou-se 30 repetições. Os resultados foram comparados com aqueles obtidos utilizando-se programação linear e programação linear inteira. Para a programação inteira considerou-se a melhor solução após 1 hora de processamento. A melhor configuração foi a que considerou 80 células na população inicial, taxas de seleção, clonagem, hipermutação e substituição iguais a 0,20, 0,80, 0,20 e 0,50, respectivamente. Os resultados apresentados pela metaheurística Clonal Selection Algorithm foram 1,69% superiores à programação linear inteira e 4,35% inferior a programação linear. Conclui-se que a metaheurística apresentada pode ser utilizada para resolução de problemas de ordenamento florestal.

The goal of this study was to test a different kind of metaheuristic, namely Clonal Selection Algorithm, in a forest planning problem. The problem was modeled considering the maximization of the net present value subject to the constraints: annual harvested volume between 140,000 m3 and 160,000 m3, harvest ages equal to 5, 6 or 7 years, and the impossibility of division of the management unity at harvest time. Different settings for Clonal Selection Algorithm were evaluated to include: varying selection, cloning, hypermutation, and replacement rates beyond the size of the initial population. A generation value equal to 100 was considered as a stopping criteria and 30 repetitions were performed for each setting. The results were compared to those obtained from integer linear programming and linear programming. The integer linear programming, considered to be the best solution, was obtained after 1 hour of processing. The best setting for Clonal Selection Algorithm was 80 individuals in the initial population and selection. Cloning, hypermutation, and replacement rates equal to 0.20, 0.80, 0.20 and 0.50, respectively, were found. The results obtained by Clonal Selection Algorithm were 1.69% better than the integer linear programming and 4.35% worse than the linear programming. It is possible to conclude that the presented metaheuristic can be used in the resolution of forest scheduling problems.

RESUMO Utilizando dados da série temporal mensal de preços de carvão vegetal em Minas Gerais no período de janeiro de 2000 à setembro de 2014, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o uso do sistema neuro-fuzzy para modelagem e previsão de preços. Foram utilizados quatro estruturas de modelagem considerando diferentes defasagens da variável preço (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 defasagens). A estrutura mais adequada para o sistema neuro-fuzzy foi escolhido com base nos valores de raiz quadrada do erro médio quadrático, erro médio absoluto, erro médio quadrático, erro médio percentual absoluto e máximo erro percentual absoluto para o período de previsão. Com os resultados encontrados, é possível concluir que um sistema neuro-fuzzy pode ser usado para prever corretamente os preços do carvão vegetal.

ABSTRACT Using a monthly time series of charcoal prices in Minas Gerais from January 2000 to September 2014, this study aimed to evaluate the use of neuro-fuzzy system to model the series and forecasting prices. We used four modeling structures for different prices lags (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lags). The structure most appropriate for neuro-fuzzy system was chosen based on the root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error and maximum absolute percentage error for the forecasted period. With the results found, it is possible to conclude that a neuro-fuzzy system can be used properly to predict the charcoal prices.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi obter curvas de índice de local, em povoamentos de eucalipto, por meio de regressão quantílica, e compará-las às obtidas com o uso de regressões ajustadas pelo método de mínimos quadrados ordinários. A regressão quantílica pode ser utilizada para a geração de curvas de índice de local, especialmente em presença de dados discrepantes. O método gera um feixe de curvas mais bem ajustadas aos dados observados, em comparação ao feixe gerado com as estimativas de mínimos quadrados ordinários, seja pelo método da curva-guia (curvas anamórficas), seja pela geração de curvas polimórficas (com o uso de diferentes percentis).

Abstract: The objective of this work was to obtain site index curves in eucalyptus plantations by quantile regression, and to compare them to the obtained ones with the use of fitted regressions by the method of ordinary least squares. Quantile regression can be used to generate site index curves, especially in the presence of outliers. The method generates a bundle of curves better adjusted to the observed data, compared to the one generated with the estimates of ordinary least squares, either by the guide curve method (anamorphic curves) or by polymorphic curves (using different percentiles).

Neste estudo, avaliou-se o comportamento da função densidade de probabilidade Gama com 2 parâmetros para a descrição da distribuição diamétrica de um povoamento de eucalipto em diferentes idades. Um modelo de projeção da distribuição de diâmetros foi construído e ajustado aos dados das parcelas permanentes. Os ajustes da função Gama foram avaliados pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) e o modelo de distribuição diamétrica foi avaliado por meio dos coeficientes de determinação e gráficos de resíduos das estimativas geradas pelas equações que compuseram o modelo. As distribuições diamétricas estimadas pelo sistema de equações foram comparadas com as distribuições observadas pelo teste KS. A maioria dos ajustes apresentou aderência pelo teste KS. O modelo foi capaz de projetar as distribuições diamétricas de maneira satisfatória, acompanhando a tendência de achatamento da curva da distribuição em uma sequência de idades. Conclui-se que a função Gama pode ser utilizada em um modelo de projeção da distribuição dos diâmetros de povoamentos de eucalipto

This study evaluated the behavior of the Gamma probability density function to describe the diameter distribution of eucalyptus stand at different ages. A projection model of the distribution of diameters was constructed and fitted to data from permanent plots. The settings of the Gamma function were assessed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test and the diametric distribution model was assessed by the determination coefficients and residual graphs of the estimates generated by the equations that compose the model. The diameter distributions estimated by the system of equations were compared with the distributions observed by the KS test. Most of the adjustments made by the KS test presented adherence. The model was able to design the diameter distributions satisfactorily, following the trend of flattening of the curve of distribution in a sequence of ages. Thus, the Gamma function can be used with statistical efficiency in a projection model of the diameter distribution in eucalyptus stands.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a qualidade da modelagem da distribuição diamétrica de povoamentos equiâneos de eucalipto, de acordo com a variação na amplitude de classe utilizada. Avaliaram-se tanto o ajuste da função aos dados observados quanto a projeção dos parâmetros da função, por meio de um modelo de distribuição diamétrica. Foram utilizados dados de 48 parcelas permanentes, obtidos em quatro ocasiões. Constatou-se equivalência estatística entre as distribuições observadas e as estimadas pela função Weibull, em todas as situações. A função Weibull ajustou-se adequadamente aos dados, independentemente da amplitude de classe; no entanto, a redistribuição teórica dos diâmetros por classe, por meio de um modelo de distribuição diamétrica, foi afetada pela amplitude de classe.

The objective of this work was to assess the fitting quality of the diameter distribution modeling of an even-aged stand of eucalyptus, according to the variation in the diameter class range. Both the function fitting to the observed data and the projection of the function parameters were evaluated, using a diametric distribution model. Data from 48 permanent plots, obtained at four occasions, was used. Statistical equivalence between the observed distributions and the estimated ones by the Weibull function were evidenced in all situations. The Weibull function fitted properly to the observed data independently of class range; however, the theoretical redistribution of diameter per class, using a diametric distribution model, was affected by class range.
